Also known as the Montauk Country fish, this was the first board I shaped in Montauk at the family Fort!
The Story Behind The Puff
I made a template from my favorite loaner board from Uncle Dano, a 6’6 green fish, and shrunk it down to 5’8. This was also the first stringerless blank that I had shaped and I remember thinking, “this is WAY too flexy“. Not only was it extremely difficult to shape because of how much it bent and twisted throughout the shaping process but I couldn’t imagine it working well in the surf. I remember seeing a boogie board at one of the sporting goods stores that had these extreme concaves and I was inspired to try to input what I had seen into this board. I pulled in the big guns for the color work and with the help of Auntie Tracy we taped off and painted the bottoms grey, green, and pink with foam rollers with paint that we drummed up from the basement.
We capped it off by in-laying an old, worn-in, bed sheet that was just ideal: not too bold and the perfect weight. It was also the first board I had glassed by the ultra talented team at Nature Shapes in Sayville.
I remember walking into the glassing factory and the living legend Ed Fawess caught me before I placed it on the rack of blanks and told me he would be getting into it the coming week. “Hold on, let’s see what you got going on here” he said. I was pretty excited to show him what I had cooked up and he looked at me with big eyes and said, “Damn, you got a lot going on here with this shape… you got some skills kid!” At that time I didn’t realize what a big compliment that was coming from such a phenomenal board builder and surfer, but I’ll never forget walking out of there knowing my baby was in good hands! This board has been flown coast to coast as I tested it in some pretty amazing surf from the Northern Californian breaks in Santa Cruz and back east to Block Island off of Montauk.
