Specifically regarding the last step: extension. There’s a reason we teach a stand up technique, and not a pop-up. Beginners already tend to have an excited and explosive stand up. Take advantage of the extra drive you can create by standing up compressed at first and slowly extending through the rail set.
On the surface, Michael’s question is about his stand-up and timing the execution, but there’s more to it than just that and I do my best to dive into the details of a take-off done well.
The Coaches discuss how pop-ups can feel more difficult for taller surfers, and how to overcome this challenge with a few extra tips and tricks. They also emphasize rail engagement as the top priority for any pop-up and analyze the pop-up technique for all surfers, short or tall.
Sarah asked me about hand placement while popping up. Also, she was looking for this video about practicing the stand up technique on land.
Coach Chris and Coach Evan discuss the proper white water press-up technique and difficulties, reviewing footage from the La Misión trip.
If you want to go fast, go slow. The reason we teach a step-by-step stand-up is to encourage you to focus on technique. Don’t concern yourself with speed or “popping”, that will naturally evolve from repetition and attention on your technique.
The Coaches answer Ben’s question regarding how to pop up properly on a shorter board, where your feet may not be able to touch. They also explain why standing up on land as practice is actually harder than when catching a wave, and how speedy pop-ups come from learning the technique and practicing it, rather than rushing yourself.

Joel wrote to ask about some tips for getting a little more fluid and mobility in his stand up. This is a common issue, especially for men, so I work through this question verbally and theoretically first, and then show Joel some of the things I’ve done and still do to keep my hips moving. It’s an uphill battle, especially if you’ve spent most of your life not working on your hip flexibility and mobility, but it’s never too late and a little work is better than none, so get to it !
This week we’re evaluating John’s pop-up which is controlled, balanced, and results in good foot placement with minimal excess movement during execution. This is vital in order to achieve a fluid and smooth take-off. Let’s evaluate some of the keys to having a great pop-up.
