This topic came up a number of times these past days. Since we had a run of good swell, and I was working with my more advanced students, the topic of using body mechanics to create drive was a big one for every student. So I decided to make a video for the members here regarding the same subject. While it’s not technically “advanced”, this is a principle that generally comes after you reach fundamental fluency.
Coach Chris and Coach Evan discuss the proper white water press-up technique and difficulties, reviewing footage from the La Misión trip.
Coach Chris and Coach Evan are looking at two different waves and discussing how the press up posture improves multiple elements of your surfing, including your take-off, your ride, and more.
Specifically regarding the last step: extension. There’s a reason we teach a stand up technique, and not a pop-up. Beginners already tend to have an excited and explosive stand up. Take advantage of the extra drive you can create by standing up compressed at first and slowly extending through the rail set.
If you want to go fast, go slow. The reason we teach a step-by-step stand-up is to encourage you to focus on technique. Don’t concern yourself with speed or “popping”, that will naturally evolve from repetition and attention on your technique.
Coach Chris and Coach Evan take a look at the surfing of a student and discuss a few topics.
The Coaches discuss how pop-ups can feel more difficult for taller surfers, and how to overcome this challenge with a few extra tips and tricks. They also emphasize rail engagement as the top priority for any pop-up and analyze the pop-up technique for all surfers, short or tall.
Coach Chris recounts his best lesson ever with a student, and talks about how NOT standing up is often the best way to improve your stand-up. Coach Evan and Coach Chris also discuss their thoughts on the new rule at Cloud 9 disallowing beginner surf lessons.
A private student of ours is just getting to the point in the curriculum where we start learning how to stand up after catching waves. This week’s video is what I sent her so that she could start practicing at home before we have our next session.
